Terre Haute Rex bounce back to get Saturday split

Rex win 12-0 after losing 3-2 to Springfield

TERRE HAUTE — In a lot of ways — good and bad — Saturday was a pretty good representation of the Terre Haute Rex season in Prospect League baseball.

Rex pitchers shut out the last-place Springfield Sliders in 17 consecutive innings of a doubleheader at Bob Warn Field; Terre Haute pitching has dominated Springfield often this season.

But the Sliders scored three runs in the top of the first inning of the opener, giving them a 3-2 win that the Rex’s 12-0 second-game win couldn’t erase. With second-place Quincy winning its Saturday night game against Danville, the playoff hopes for the Rex became even more remote.

“We’re aware of where we stand,” second-game star Kyle Kempf said at the end of the day. “We’re trying to win 15 of our last 20, but we can’t control what other people do. We’ve just got to take care of our business.”

The Rex took care of that in rapid fashion in Saturday’s nightcap. A one-out single by Atlee Schwab in the bottom of the first was followed by an infield hit by Brian Wolfe, a run-scoring double by Kempf and a two-run single by Kyle Zimmerman.

The same players combined for two more runs in the third. Schwab singled, was safe at second on an error on Wolfe’s grounder and scored on a double by Kempf. A bloop single by Andrew Cope drove in Wolfe for a 5-0 lead.

Taylor Krugh, a tough-luck pitcher for the Rex this season, was on his way to six two-hit innings, and got even more run support in the fourth. Two errors kept the rally moving, Schwab got his third hit and first two RBIs, and Kempf capped the inning with a three-run homer to left.

“We had kind of a slow start [in the afternoon game],” Kempf said. “We battled back, we just couldn’t get the extra run. We were focused for the second game and jumped out early.”

Kempf batted in the sixth with a chance for a triple that apparently would have made him the first Rex player to hit for the cycle. He hit the ball hard but to straightaway center field for an out, and he was rested the last three innings.

“I was trying [to hit the triple],” he admitted after the game. “I got my shot. I was fun to get a shot [at hitting for the cycle].”

Springfield got four hits and a sacrifice fly with one out in the first inning of the day, then got just nine hits in the 17 innings after that.

The Rex couldn’t solve the Sliders’ Cody Bolen and Jordan Pesko, however, getting just a solo homer by Owen Conway in the bottom of the fifth and a double by Kempf and run-scoring single by Zimmerman in the sixth.
