Clinton falls apart in seventh, despite solid start

TERRE HAUTE — Clinton Post 140 experienced a total collapse in the final three innings of the American Legion Baseball Regional at Terre Haute North High School.

Floyds Knobbs Post 42 scored 11 runs with the help of six Clinton errors for a 16-6, 10-run-rule win in the opening game of the regional. Clinton now plays either Terre Haute Post 346 or Madison today in the 3:30 p.m. lower bracket of the double elimination tournament.

“That wasn’t the team we’ve come to love,” Clinton coach Ron Alabaugh said.

The same Clinton team that played Terre Haute Post 346 to a one-run game in the sectional final committed eight fielding errors, and the pitching staff walked eight and hit three batters.

“Defensively, we did not play well at all,” Alabaugh said.

The collapse was as surprising as the success the second-team program has experienced. Clinton scored four runs in the second inning and two in the fourth to lead 6-2 after 31/2 innings.

“We did what we wanted to early,” Alabaugh said, searching for an explanation.

With two out in the fourth, Floyds Knobs scored three runs on three walks, a hit batter and a two-run double by Drew Kissel. Floyds Knobs took the lead for good with three runs on four hits and two Clinton errors in the sixth and broke the contest open with a four-run seventh and a four-run eighth inning.

Brody Jacobs led Clinton’s seven-hit offense with a double, single and two RBIs, and Kam Weyrach had two singles and two RBIs.

Next — On Saturday at noon at Terre Haute North High School, Floyds Knobs (25-6) plays the winner of Terre Haute Post 346 and Madison. Clinton Post 140 (15-12) plays the either Madison or Post 346 at 3:30 p.m.
