• Belleville Althoff 19, Casey 17
— At Belleville, Ill., Casey’s football season ended Saturday night when Donavan Gagen kicked a 40-yard field goal.

Just 0:00.4 remained on the Lindenwood University clock after the kick hit the crossbar and bounced over, but it was enough time for Dalton Livvix to take the ensuing kickoff and return it deep into Althoff territory before being tackled to end the contest.

The victory gave the 9-3 Crusaders a spot in the Final Four of the Illinois Class 2A playoffs against Camp Point Central, while Casey concluded another stellar season at 11-1.

Casey needed just four plays to score two touchdowns to take 14-7 lead and hold it until the third period.

Shawn McCown recovered a fumble on the second play of the game and the Warriors began their first drive at the Althoff 37-yard line. Livvix got open for a 28-yard scoring run on the third play and Casey had a 7-0 lead after Jesse Burnett kicked the extra point.

The Crusaders drove 80 yards to gain a 7-7 tie, but Nicco Stepina went 71 yards on Casey’s next play and the Warriors had a 14-7 lead they held until late in the third period, when the Crusaders scored following a Casey turnover to tie the game.

Casey had good field position in the third period but failed to add to its lead.

The Crusaders took their first lead at 16-14 on a safety when the football went into the end zone on an attempted Casey punt.

Casey blocked a Belleville Althoff punt later in the period and took a 17-16 lead on Burnett’s 21-yard field goal with just over one minute left to play in the game.

Belleville Althoff began its final drive on its own 33-yard line but moved into Casey territory on two big plays, setting up Gagan’s game-winning kick.
