West Vigo escapes at North Vermillion in overtime

TERRE HAUTE — Both West Vigo and North Vermillion were coming off tough Friday night losses going into Saturday night’s contest and overtime was probably the last thing both boys high school basketball teams wanted.

But a young Falcon team held close throughout the game and rode a strong second half by junior standout Brayden Woodard to force an extra session, although the Vikings hit 10 free throws in the final 12 minutes to escape with a 67-63 win.

“It was a tough night,” West Vigo coach Joe Boehler said. “We were coming off an emotional game on Friday against Terre Haute North, and made a lot of mental mistakes.

“I was proud of the way we held on at the end and pulled out the win.”

West Vigo led 9-6 after a slow first period, and maintained a 25-21 halftime lead.

The Vikings pulled away a little in the third period, taking a 39-31 lead on a Cade Lindsey basket.

North Vermillion wouldn’t go away, mainly thanks to the high-jumping Woodard — who hit a half-court shot at the halftime buzzer for the second straight night and scored his team’s first 10 points of the second half. He finished with 28.

“He’s a really good player,” Boehler said. “We had a hard time handling him.”

The Falcons cut the gap to 42-38 after three periods, and the baskets seesawed for the first part of the fourth period.

The Vikings took a 54-45 lead with 4:37 left on a three-point play by Kyle Stewart, and it seemed they had things in hand, but NV had other ideas.

The Falcons, who have only one senior and used four freshmen among their eight players on the night, got a basket from Jacob Earl and a trey from Braeden Hollowell to cut the gap to five again with 3:38 left.

A Kody Zumwalt basket with :58 left made it a two-point game, and Woodard scored the tying hoop with nine seconds left after West Vigo missed a one-and-one with 29.2 seconds left.

Woodard swished yet another halfcourt shot about a half second after the buzzer at the end of the fourth period, or the Falcons would have ended it then.

Woodard got the first hoop of the final period and Cody Wright hit a trey to put NV up 59-56, but West Vigo got eight straight points and never trailed again.

Aaron Kirby led West Vigo with 20 points, while Stewart had 14, Alex West had 12 and Adrien Corenflos had 10.

Wright had 16 for NV, while Zumwalt and Earl had eight each.
