South boys golf team uses balance to win

BRAZIL — Terre Haute South was a winner in boys high school boys golf Wednesday at Forest Park.

The Braves counted four scores in the 30s to defeat Northview 146-155 in the first dual match of the season for both teams. Both teams opened the season in the Northview Invitational at the same course last Saturday.

Drew Cahill of South had three birdies and two bogeys in his round to take medalist honors with a 1-under-par 34, edging teammate Luke Peoples, who shot 35, for the honor.

Sam Mimms had 38, while Ryan Cahill and Gregory Stultz each had 39 to round out the South scoring.

Keegan Roembke had one birdie to lead the Knights with 36. Freshman Blake Bennett shot 39 and Dylan Nesty and Sam Grimes each had 40.

The teams tied in the junior varsity match, each scoring 172. Braxton McIntyre had 39 for South and Austin Bowen shot 40 for the host team.

South coach Chris Cassell was pleased with the results. “It was much better than Saturday … conditions were better. It’s good to see two freshmen [Stultz and McIntyre] under 40 in their first match,” he said.

The Braves have an early tee time Saturday in the Danville Invitational at Twin Bridges and will vie for county honors next Tuesday.

Northview coach Josh Trout was pleased with the play of Roembke and Bennett, in particular.

“Roembke had a solid 36,” he said. “Blake was shaky at the start but birdied the last two holes. We still have work to do.”

The Knights are slated to meet Rockville and Riverton Parke on the same course today.
