West Vigo softball victorious over Owen Valley

TERRE HAUTE — West Vigo is off to a 1-0 start in Western Indiana Conference softball.

The Vikings bested Owen Valley 2-0 on Tuesday in the conference opener for both teams behind the fiv-hit shutout pitching of Hannah Harden.

West Vigo scored both of its runs in the fifth inning when freshman Mary Curley singled to begin the inning.

Baylee Waters walked with one out and Cierra McClain followed with her second hit of the contest to drive in Curley with the first run of the game and Waters scored on a groundout by Shelby Edington.

Harden allowed one hit in the sixth and one in the seventh to close out the contest. The junior walked just one batter and struck out three to improve to 2-1 for the season.

“My best pitch was my low outside fast ball. My changeup was good too,” she said after the game played in warm, cloudy, breezy conditions at West Vigo.

Owen Valley never had more than one runner on base in any inning and none reached second base.

Senior Rebecca Strong was the losing pitcher and also had a nice game, allowing six hits, walking four and striking out three.

Neither team had an error and both teams had some nice plays.

Waters and Cierra McClain each had two hits for the winners. Brittany Voils and Curley both had one.

Madison Summerlot had two hits for the Patriots, now 1-2.

“We played well defensively. Offensively, we did not execute well and left too many runners on base. We can work on that . . . and we had  some clutch hits today,” said West Vigo coach Cherish Easton.

The Vikings are 3-2 for the season and go for their third victory of the week on Friday, playing host to Riverton Parke.

“I think we are further ahead skillwise than we have been in past seasons. I am looking forward to us hitting our peak,” said Easton.
