Prep roundup: North girls tennis wins opener

TERRE HAUTE — Terre Haute North won all but one game en route to defeating visiting West Vigo 5-0 in season-opening girls high school tennis Tuesday.

Singles — Anna Potter (THN) def. Kaylen Cheesman 6-0, 6-0; Laura Mascari (THN) def. Payton McCall 6-0, 6-0; Morgan Cook (THN) def. Justice Waltermeir 6-0, 6-0.

Doubles — Olivia Caldwell-Meredith Egan (THN) def. Mackenzie Collins-Sydney Brown 6-0, 6-0; Carmen Nickels-Caroline Potter (THN) def. Sarah Wyrick-Makayla Herring 6-0, 6-1.

JV — North won 13-0.

Next — North (1-0) will remain on its home courts to face Plainfield today.

In other girls tennis action:

Fountain Central 3, Rockville 2 — At Rockville, the Rox fell in a Wabash River Conference contest.

Singles — Brooke Tilley (R) def. Hannah Cox 6-0, 6-0; Adie Milner (R) def. Shelley Holt 6-2, 7-5; Kathyrn Majors (FC) def. Beth Wagnoner 6-4, 6-4.

Doubles — Claire McGrady-Abby Moore (FC) def. Megan Baxter-Kay Kiger 6-2, 6-4; Allie Bay-Jordan Lindquist (FC) def. Erica White-Eliza Becker 6-3, 6-4.

Next — Rockville (0-3) plays Thursday at Greencastle.


North prevails — At Hulman Links, Terre Haute North’s boys bested Southmont 151-204 in its opening dual meet of the season.

SOUTHMONT (204) — Monts 43, Williams 48, Whalen 55, Stewart 58.

Sullivan wins quad meet — At Sullivan Elks, Sullivan bested runner-up Owen Valley by five strokes to win a four-way meet that also included North Central and Union.

SULLIVAN (158) — Nathan Pirtle 39, Colt Kuppler 39, Luke Willis 40, Seth Conwell 40

OWEN VALLEY (163) — Jackson 37, Parker 39, Johnson 41, Pemberton 46.

NORTH CENTRAL (200) — Crooks 41, Childs 49, Drake 55, Brown 55.

UNION (209) — Birdsong 43, Foglesong 50, Camden 57, Mersey 59.

    Jordan Bradley didn’t walk a batter until the sixth inning, scattering three hits in a shutout pitching performance to lead Terre Haute North to the District 4 championship with a 4-0 victory over a tough Clinton team.

    To paraphrase Carl Spackler, the heavy stuff’s not going to come for quite awhile. So while it’s true that I’m back from a week’s vacation, it’s not time — yet — for the big vacation column. The two-time Eastern Conference runner-ups announced they had signed three free agents — backup big man Lavoy Allen, swingman C.J. Miles and Damjan Rudez, a sharp-shooting forward from Europe.

  • Thoroughbreds complete race card at Martinsville

    Thoroughbred races were on Friday’s card to wind up four days of Illinois racing at the Martinsville Agricultural Fair. Horses owned by Bart Baird and Lance and Stacey Holsapple won all six of the thoroughbred races on the card with two other features run for ponies and mules.

    James told Sports Illustrated Friday that he’s decided to go home. It’s a move that would have seemed unfathomable four years ago, after the venomous fallout that followed his decision to leave Cleveland for the Miami Heat.

    Megan Ramer and Colton Kuppler were two winners in the junior city golf tournament concluded Thursday in sunny, warm conditions at Rea Park.
    Both golfers claimed titles in the 15-17 age division for the first time while Ramer and Andrew Granda were two of the winners in the 2013 tournament.
