Metro sports: ISU’s Stone, Riemenschneider honored by MVC

TERRE HAUTE — Indiana State junior Megan Stone and freshman Brooke Riemenschneider each earned Missouri Valley Conference Athlete of the Week honors, according to an announcement from the league office Monday.

Stone was named the MVC Player of the Week, while Riemenschneider was named MVC Newcomer of the Week. This marks the first time in school history that two players have earned an honor in the same week. It also is the first time in ISU history that the team has earned more than two honors in a season as sophomore pitcher Taylor Lockwood has been named MVC Pitcher of the Week on two occasions.

The Sycamores will return to action today to play a single game at Indiana, beginning at 5 p.m.

Awards

• Engineers honored — Three Rose-Hulman student-athletes have been named Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Players of the Week for their efforts last week.

Sophomore Kody Alayon was named HCAC Baseball Hitter of the Week, freshman Brandon Benedict claimed Men’s Tennis Player of the Week honors and sophomore Sanders Park earned Men’s Golfer of the Week accolades.

Alayon used his offensive and defensive skills to help Rose earn a three-game sweep over Hanover on Friday and Saturday. The shortstop finished 6 of 11 (.545) at the plate with four runs scored, one double, five RBIs and four stolen bases as the Engineers swept Hanover in a three-game series. He committed zero errors in 19 attempts at shortstop and turned five double plays in the field.

Alayon’s efforts helped Rose-Hulman increase its winning streak to eight games. The Engineers will play host to Franklin (13-7, 4-2 HCAC) in a 6 p.m. matchup.

Benedict finished 2-0 at the No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles positions to help the Engineers defeat Defiance 6-3 and Hanover 9-0 in the first two matches of the HCAC regular season. The freshman improved his record to 4-2 at the No. 1 singles position and 4-2 at No. 1 doubles.

The men’s tennis team (2-4 overall) will return to action Wednesday against Mount St. Joseph. The Engineers also face league foes Transylvania and Franklin this weekend.

Park placed second overall in the Rose-Hulman Invitational over the weekend to Men’s Golfer of the Week honors. The sophomore fired rounds of 74 and 73 to finish one stroke behind medalist Michael Marcagi of Thomas More. Rose placed second in the team standings.

The Engineers will return to action at Hanover this weekend.
