Manchester defeated Marietta 8-5 Saturday at Rose-Hulman’s Art Nehf Field to advance to the NCAA Division III baseball championships.
The Spartans are 39-5-1 after winning the Mideast Regional with a 4-0 record. Marietta was the two-time defending national champion.
Bryce Murphy had a three-run double Saturday to give Manchester the lead for good at 6-4, then pitched the last three innings in relief to earn both a save and the tournament’s Most Valuable Player award.
n Engineers in final prep — At Naperville, Ill., Rose-Hulman athletes had two first-place finishes and a school-record performance Friday night at the North Central Last Chance Invitational.
Creasey Clauser recorded a time of 57.50 seconds to set a school record in the 400-meter dash, while high jumper Liz Evans (5-foot-8 3/4) and 400-meter hurdler Travis Stallings (53.30) were winners.
Tyler Hannan was second in the men’s 400 (48.69) and Trey Cahill third in men’s hammer throw (179-5).
The Engineers are waiting for the competition release from the NCAA to determine how many competitors will be at the national championship meet later this week.
n Ace — David Bays of Terre Haute had a hole-in-one on the third hole at Rea Park on Friday, using a 7-iron from 135 yards.

n ISU baseball outing — At Idle Creek, the annual Indiana State University baseball outing was played Friday.

n Race called off — At Clermont, the Hall of Fame Classic for U.S. Auto Club Silver Crown cars scheduled for Saturday was not run.
Reasons for calling off the race were the extension of the Indianpolis 500 qualifying schedule and the chance of rain. It is hoped to reschedule the race.
n Darland wins — At Bloomington, Dave Darland won the feature race in U.S. Auto Club sprint car racing Friday at Bloomington Speedway.
Darland led the final 12 laps to win the 30-lap Larry Rice Classic main. Kevin Thomas led the first 18 laps and took second.
Chase Stockon was fourth and will take a 14-point lead over Darland into the Hulman Classic on Wednesday at the Action Track in Terre Haute.
