Kraemer grand-slam helps lift ISU to 9-4 win

MINNEAPOLIS — Koby Kraemer’s grand-slam homer was the big blow in a six-run sixth inning Sunday in the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome as Indiana State came from behind for a 9-4 victory over Minnesota in college baseball.

ISU scored all of its runs in the last four innings to win the three-game series with the Golden Gophers and improve to 7-7 for the year. Minnesota is now 12-8.

Two Minnesota pitchers had held the Sycamores without a hit through five innings and the home team had a 3-0 lead, but Casey McCurdy got a leadoff single, Tyler Wampler walked and Landon Curry was safe when his bunt was bobbled to load the bases with no outs in the sixth.

Robby Ort drove in the first run with a single, Mike Fitzgerald was safe on an error for another run, and Kraemer hit a 1-and-1 pitch into the first row of seats in left-center to put the visitors ahead 6-3.

The homer was ISU’s first extra-base hit in 33 innings, since a triple by Kraemer at Austin Peay on Wednesday. The six-run inning was the most for the Sycamores since a six-run frame at Southern Illinois on May 12, 2012.

Minnesota got a run in the bottom of the sixth, but ISU put the game away with an RBI triple by Ort in the top of the eighth and a two-run double by Curry in the ninth.

Starting pitcher Daniel Peterson allowed a run on five hits in 41⁄3 innings. Tyler Browning got the win in relief and combined with Greg Kuhlman, Tyler Fehringer and Josh Dove to hold the Gophers to just three hits in the last 32⁄3 innings.

ISU returns to Bob Warn Field for its next five games, including a 3 p.m. rematch with Austin Peay on Wednesday and the first Missouri Valley Conference series of the year against Southern Illinois beginning Friday.

  • Andy Amey: Just a small trip to talk about this time

To paraphrase Carl Spackler, the heavy stuff’s not going to come for quite awhile. So while it’s true that I’m back from a week’s vacation, it’s not time — yet — for the big vacation column. Trips to Noblesville, Brunswick and Reelsville, while providing some nice family time, don’t really have the cachet to fill newspaper space.
