ISU's Johnson invited to World University Games

TERRE HAUTE — Indiana State senior Felisha Johnson will be traveling the world this summer after being named to represent the United States in the women’s shot put at the World University Games in Kazan, Russia.

“It is a long way to go, but I am excited to be able to compete and represent my country,” Johnson said.

ISU throws coach Erin Gilreath, who was scheduled to compete in the 2003 World University Games before the USA pulled out due to the SARs scare, is excited that Johnson will have the opportunity to compete on the world stage.

The World University Games will take place July 6-17 in Kazan, with Johnson competing July 10.

Johnson recently placed third in the NCAA outdoor track and field championships, posting her best throw on her final attempt in the women’s shot put to move up from fifth with a distance of 56 feet, 9 1/4 inches. She earned her second First-Team All-American honor with the finish. She placed fifth at the 2012 championships and 18th in the 2011 championships.

She established the Indiana State record in the event with a throw of 59-11 1/4 in the East Preliminary this year.

Johnson will be the first member of the ISU women’s track team to compete in the World University Games. Sycamore Greggmar Swift competed in the men’s 110-meter hurdles for his native Barbados in 2011.

She also will be competing in the USA Track & Field Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Des Moines, Iowa, on June 20-22. Former Sycamore Kylie Hutson will be in the USA Championships to compete in the women’s pole vault, while Brandon Pounds is a provisional qualifier in the men’s hammer throw.
