Two Sycamores with Scott during Saturday incident

TERRE HAUTE — A Vigo County’s Sheriff’s case report of Brenton Scott’s arrest last Saturday indicated that Scott, an Indiana State basketball player, tried to pass himself off as his twin brother and that two of his teammates were with him at the time of the incident.

Scott was booked for operating while intoxicated, possession of marijuana, possession of paraphernalia and false reporting.

Scott, a redshirt freshman guard on ISU’s team, was pulled over at 10:36 p.m. on Saturday on 3rd Street in Terre Haute. According to the case report, Scott was pulled over for failing to signal a lane change near the corner of 3rd Street and Washington Street. When questioned, Scott identified himself as Bryson Scott.

According to the report, Brenton Scott provided officers with a paper copy from the BMV of a driver’s license identifying himself as Bryson Scott.

Bryson Scott is Brenton Scott’s twin brother. Bryson Scott is currently a men’s basketball player at Purdue. The brothers are from Fort Wayne and played together at Northrop High School.

The smell of burnt marijuana was observed by officers on the scene. When questioned, officers said Scott said that he and Alex Etherington, another redshirt freshman on ISU’s team who was in the front passenger seat, had smoked marijuana an hour or two before getting in the car.

Etherington attempted to give credence to Scott’s assertion that he was Bryson Scott. When questioned by officers about Scott, Etherington allegedly said, “That’s Brenton, err I mean Brenton’s brother.”

Etherington later admitted that Brenton Scott was the identity of the driver. Devonte Brown, another ISU player and the third passenger in the vehicle, also told officers that the driver was Brenton Scott.

The case report indicated that Brown was not aware that Etherington had told officers Brenton Scott was Bryson Scott. It also indicated that Brown had not heard Scott tell Etherington to tell officers he was Bryson Scott. The report also indicated that Brown was not with Scott or Etherington when they had smoked marijuana.

Verbal consent was given to search the car and one gram of marijuana was found in a red cigar pack under the driver’s seat. Scott was administered field sobriety tests which he failed. Scott was then transported to the Vigo County Jail and booked. Etherington and Brown were not booked.

On Monday, ISU coach Greg Lansing indicated that Scott was suspended indefinitely from the team.
