Carmel sends South boys to second MIC loss of weekend

TERRE HAUTE — Terre Haute South got to deal with a second kind of Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference high school basketball defense in as many nights Saturday, but with the same result.

After losing at Lawrence North on Friday, facing pressure similar to what they hope to put on other teams, the Braves came home to face Carmel’s grinders and lost 63-38 to the two-time defending Class 4A state champions.

Even though the Braves stayed patient, stuck to their game plan and worked extremely hard, they had to battle just to reach double figures in the first half against the Greyhounds, doing so when Jerad Fuson’s last-minute 3-pointer cut Carmel’s lead to 28-11.

“Every game has got to be big for us,” coach Scott Heady of the Greyhounds said afterward, referring to the target his team wears, “and I thought our guys were ready. Our defense was pretty good.”

The Braves found some things that worked offensively — getting the ball to Timmy Herrin was often the most effective option — in the second half, but by that time the visitors had found a few things themselves. After a 3-for-14 first quarter, Carmel shot 70 percent from the field the rest of the way.

“We didn’t shoot well the first half [4 for 14] and we dug ourselves a hole we could never get out of,” coach Scott Ridge of the Braves said. “The effort was there, but that’s a really good team and [the Greyhounds] deserve a lot of the credit tonight.”

Neither team scored for nearly three minutes, but then the Greyhounds got nine points in a two-minute span. Spence Tofaute hit one of two free throws for South’s first point with 1:59 left in the period, and Herrin got South’s first field goal to get his team within 11-3 at the first stop.

A Herrin 3-pointer was all South could manage for awhile in the second quarter too, allowing Carmel to build leads of 24-6 and 28-8.

“They make you work for everything,” Ridge said later, “and offensively they expose any mistakes you make.”

The Braves seemed to learn from their first-half woes, however, and almost matched their visitors point for point for more than a quarter. It was 48-30 early in the fourth period, although the Braves got no closer.

“I felt [South] was a team that on any given night is dangerous,” Heady said. “They have a lot of guys who can make plays.”

Herrin led South with 16 points and also had five rebounds, four steals and a blocked shot. No other Brave scored more than six, however, and Herrin’s rebound total was a team high as the bigger Greyhounds doubled their hosts on the boards.

South was still without freshman guard Jaylen Minnett, injured in the Pizza Hut Classic semifinal game, and senior Da’Shon Heyen.

Zach McRoberts had 18 points, nine rebounds, four steals and four assists for the winners. Ryan Cline added 11 points and Michael Bruns 10.

The Greyhounds have a Wabash Valley connection, incidentally. Sophomore Sam Oliphant, one of the leading scorers in the junior varsity game and a varsity contributor in the second half, is the son of former L&M and Indiana University star Jeff Oliphant.
