Hall of Fame inductions ahead for Valley pair

TERRE HAUTE — Hall of Fame honors are coming up for a pair of Wabash Valley athletes.

Ted Sweatt, a Wiley High School graduate and the 1964 state high jump champion, will be inducted into the Indiana Track & Field Hall of Fame. The ceremony is 5:30 p.m. Jan. 31 at Sheraton ad Keystone Crossing, Indianapolis.

Lori Leonard Swaim, a 1994 Turkey Run High School graduate and a member of the school’s first regional championship team in any sport (softball, 1993) is one of six athletes who will be inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame at the University of Southern Indiana in February.

She won All-America honors as a USI freshman in 1995, hitting .426 with 40 stolen bases and was part of Great Lakes Valley Conference championship teams in 1995 and 1998. She is second in hits, third in stolen bases, fourth in runs, seventh in doubles and 10th in RBIs on the USI career lists.

    After dropping a pair of games to Missouri Baptist on Wednesday, Saint Mary-of-the-Woods beat Lindenwood-Belleville 9-7 and 1-0, both games in eight innings, on Thursday afternoon.
    Sarah Burnham’s seventh-inning homer in the first game tied the score 4-4, and the Pomeroys took a 5-4 lead later in the inning on an RBI double by Brooke Jordan before the Lynx tied the score in the bottom of the inning.

  • METRO ROUNDUP: ISU softball splits pair in Florida

    Pitching dominated Tuesday’s opening day of play in the Rebel Spring Games for the Indiana State softball team, which defeated Bucknell 2-0 before falling 2-0 to Creighton.
    “The girls did a great job in the first game getting a couple runs,” ISU coach Shane Bouman said. “We leaned on [sophomore] Yvette Alvarez who pitched really well. We probably got as much as we could out of her and probably should have changed earlier so put that on me. We have a couple little things we can clean up and get a little better and we will be ready to go tomorrow.”

    Indiana State freshman left-hander Ryan Keaffaber won his first game as a Sycamore and senior catcher Mike Fitzgerald went 3 for 3 as ISU defeated host Eastern Illinois 6-4 in college baseball Tuesday.

  • Top returners lead Cream over Crimson in Hoosiers' spring game

    The Cream team at Saturday’s Cream and Crimson intrasquad game had Indiana’s top returning rusher and receiver and the Hoosiers’ top-rated passer from last season.
    No surprise, then, that Tevin Coleman, Shane Wynn and Tre Roberson guided the Cream to a resounding 24-14 win over the Crimson.

  • Rose-Hulman baseball gets wild doubleheader sweep

    Host Rose-Hulman came back from an early six-run deficit in the first game Saturday and went on to a 13-12, 7-1 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference baseball sweep over Mount St. Joseph.
    The wild opener featured a Rose-Hulman comeback from an 8-2 deficit and included 18 hits and two school records for the Engineers.

  • METRO ROUNDUP: ISU softball earns doubleheader sweep at Missouri State

    Yvette Alvarez’s one-hit shutout capped a dominant day of pitching Saturday as Indiana State swept a Missouri Valley Conference softball doubleheader at Missouri State by scores of 6-1 and 4-0.
    “We pitched well,” coach Shane Bouman said. “Both Taylor Lockwood in the first game and Yvette Alvarez in the second game threw great. When you pitch good and you play good defense and get some key hits, good things are going to happen.
