Pushing tempo: TH South builds some momentum with first victory of season

FARMERSBURG — North Central hung tight with Terre Haute South through the entire first half Wednesday night in boys high school basketball.

The Braves showed signs of pulling away in the opening 16 minutes, before eventually pushing the tempo to wear down the Thunderbirds.

South’s 77-38 victory was its first of the young season, a nice momentum builder for a young squad heading into a Vigo County rivalry game against West Vigo on Friday.

North Central looked capable of defending the honor of its homecourt in the early going.

Loren Drake’s jump shot pulled the host Thunderbirds within 11-7 going into the second quarter, but Braves freshman Jaylen Minnett helped spark the Braves with a steal and layup in the full-court press to start the second quarter. Jaylen forced another turnover moments later.

It was Jaylen’s older brother, junior Tre Minnett, who led the Braves with two 3-pointers in the first quarter.

Jaylen hit a pair of 3-pointers in the second quarter as South built a 26-15 lead. North Central had a little spurt to pull within 29-21 with two minutes left before halftime.

Andrew Nikirk hit a 3-pointer to start the 5-0 run. Nick Stucker made a steal, passed ahead to Gavin Stanifer, who dropped a pass off to Mitchell Peterson for a layup.

South got the last bucket of the first half as Jaylen Minnett assisted his brother Tre for a 3-pointer with three seconds left.

“North Central was ready to play. Coach Kamman had those guys ready and they executed their game plan well. Their 2-3 zone was bothering us,” South coach Scott Ridge said.

Jaylen Minnett had 8 of his career-high 14 points in the second quarter, earning to start in the third quarter. He came out with another steal and assist to start the second half for South.

“A couple of those guys coming off the bench our good scorers,” Ridge said. “We can have a pretty good punch. Our second group played better than our first group at times.”

Timmy Herrin with scored eight of his 11 points in the third quarter as South began to pull away on the strength of its defensive pressure and depth.

“When Timmy got up at the top of that 1-3-1 [zone defense], he gave us some energy. He’s a real key to getting us going,” Ridge said.

Spence Tofaute was also aggressive for the Braves at both ends, chipping in 10 points. South was led by Logan Dinkel with seven rebounds.

“In the second half, our depth, playing 10 guys and forcing the tempo, proved to our advantage. We’d like to play fast and bother other teams if we can,” Ridge said.

South looks to build off the victory, with the West Vigo game one last chance to prepare for the Pizza Hut Wabash Valley Classic.

“Our kids are playing really hard and doing what we ask. They keep doing that, we’ll keep getting better,” Ridge said.
