RAMBLIN’ RECK: Hoops are hot this week in Valley

TERRE HAUTE —

High school basketball — boys and girls — is off to a nice start in the Valley, and some interesting games are on this week’s card.

In Illinois, Casey and Marshall meet in a Clark County rivalry game tonight at Marshall. The Warriors won their first game. The Lions are 4-1, taking third in the Capital Classic.

Robinson, Rockville, West Vigo and Linton are four of the undefeated teams with the Maroons and Rox both winning early-season tournaments against strong competition.

The 5-0 Maroons finally will have a home game this week, facing Red Hill on Friday. That same night, the Rox will take on South Vermillion in a home game.

Lane Mahurin of Rockville was the early leader in Indiana stats in blocks with 13.

West Vigo was a winner in two Western Indiana Conference games on the road last week and will hit the road for two more games this week. The Vikings go for a 3-0 league start at Northview and will be at South Knox on Saturday.

Linton is 3-0 and is idle until next week unless there’s been a change in the schedule.

Terre Haute North and South both have home games against Metropolitan Interschdolastic foes Friday night, when Ben Davis is at North and Center Grove is at South.

The Patriots also will play Bloomington South on Saturday at North. J.R. Holmes is in his 30th season at South and is in his 42nd season overall. He’s one of the state’s winningest coaches.

MVC teams win — Two Missouri Valley Conference football teams have gained the quarterfinals of the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs.

Illinois State edged Appalachian State 38-37 in overtime and North Dakota State bested league rival South Dakota State 28-3.

Illinois State is at Eastern Washington and North Dakota State has a home game with Wofford this week.

In volleyball, Wichita won twice and plays Southern Cal at Austin, Texas, in regional semifinal action. Five Big Ten teams are still alive including Purdue.

Tom-Cattin’ It — Former Indiana State standout Travis Inman has been named to the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame Silver Anniversary Team.

Inman played high school ball at Avon and is in the Top 30 in the all-time scoring list.

• Anyone who listened to the Indianapolis Colts on the radio on Sunday did not hear the familiar voice of Bob Lamey. He lost his voice.

• SMU is 8-1 after beating Hofstra in men’s basketball. Larry Brown has returned to college coaching and his high-priced assistant is former Illinois State coach Tim Jankovich, who is set to take over if Brown decides to retire or take another job again.

• Northview High School has begun a search for a new football coach. George Gettle has resigned.

• Former Martinsville, Ill., High School standout Heidi Dahnke is playing for Illinois-Chicago and will be in Terre Haute on Friday for a game with Indiana State.

• Northern Illinois of the Mid-American Conference will meet Florida State in the Orange Bowl, a BCS game. The Huskies beat out Big 12 and other teams to get the game.

Marian University will meet Morningside of Iowa for the NAIA football championship.

Former Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis did not fare well in his first season at Kansas. The Wildcats won once.

• Evansville Harrison football fans have submitted petitions calling for the dismissal of coach Brian Lewis, who is 4-37 in four seasons. Displeasure rose when the team had to forfeit a win due to using an ineligible player.

• In case you missed it, Big Ten and ACC men’s basketball teams went 6-6 in their televised challenge action.

  • Andy Amey: Just a small trip to talk about this time

To paraphrase Carl Spackler, the heavy stuff’s not going to come for quite awhile. So while it’s true that I’m back from a week’s vacation, it’s not time — yet — for the big vacation column. Trips to Noblesville, Brunswick and Reelsville, while providing some nice family time, don’t really have the cachet to fill newspaper space.

LeBron James is going back to the Cleveland Cavaliers.
