CLOVERDALE — The North Central Thunderbirds built a 17-point lead then held off the scrappy Cloverdale Clovers on Tuesday night to open the boys high school basketball season with a 57-55 victory at Cloverdale.

Led by the perimeter shooting of freshman Gavin Stanifer with six three-point baskets, North Central took a 48-35 lead into the fourth quarter and pushed it to 54-37 before Cloverdale rallied to the two-point final margin.

“We got out of our rhythm. We wanted to be patient and run the clock and take the layup if we had it. [The Clovers] were in man-to-man [defense] and I thought we did a good job of if the lane was open we took it and we got some layups off it. Then [Cloverdale] went back to their zone and we decided to continue to pass around the perimeter instead of attack,” North Central coach Ryan Kamman said.

Stanifer, who hit six of seven 3-point attempts, led the Thunderbirds with 18 points, followed by Andrew Nikirk with 14, Austin Jewell 11 and Lebeda 10.

Cloverdale, also a young team, was led by junior Brandon Dorman with 20 points, 10 coming in the fourth quarter rally. Kade Schroer hit five threes in a 16-point effort and Nick Cupp had 13.

“We were very pleased with the effort and that we didn’t quit. We’ve got to have patience with this club,” Cloverdale coach Pat Rady said after opening his 49th season as a varsity basketball coach.

After leading 28-27 at halftime, North Central outscored Cloverdale 20-8 in the third quarter to build 48-35 lead going into the fourth quarter. The margin hit 54-37 with 4:30 to play and the Thunderbirds tried to take some time off the clock.

Picking up the defensive pressure, Cloverdale took advantage of five North Central turnovers in the final quarter. Cloverdale’s Dorman scored 10 points and with 9.8 seconds left in the game North Central was clinging to a three-point lead. The Clovers missed one inside shot, plus two free throws in the closing seconds.
