Wallace wins UMP feature

Former NASCAR driver overtakes Sprint Cup rookie

TERRE HAUTE — NASCAR Sprint Cup rookie Justin Allgaier led the UMP Modifieds 20-lap feature race through eight laps Wednesday night at the Terra Haute Action Track.

But former NASCAR driver Kenny Wallace found an opening on the bottom of the back straightaway and took a five-car length lead on the remainder of the field by the midway point of the race.

Wallace held on for the victory, one he savored in front of the fans on the front straightaway.

“This win means more than any Nationwide race I ever won,” Wallace said.  “We raced in Kentucky before this and had a rough race track, destroyed the drive shaft, transmission. My team got this car ready to go.”

In the UMP Dirtcar Summer Nationals, Billy Moyer won his fourth race of the schedule so far. He’ll move up from ninth in the points standings. Moyer dominated the field, leading from start to finish.

Wallace also credited a strong field for a great race.

Jacob Poel took second place while veteran driver Ken Schrader moved up to third after starting fourth.

Allgaier got back to second place quickly after Wallace’s move with Poel, but Allgaier had engine problems on the 16th lap as smoke began coming from the back of his car.

Terre Haute native Kenny Carmichael got into the top 10 with a ninth-place finish.

Scott Ricketts of Cory left the track on the 15th lap. He finished 13th, just ahead of Kenny Carmichael Jr., who drove off the front straightaway with mechanical problems on the eighth lap.
