EDGEWOOD — West Vigo’s defense made some big plays Friday night at Edgewood High School.

But the Vikings’ offense turned the ball over seven times and the host Mustangs converted four of them into a 33-12 football victory.

Edgewood intercepted West Vigo quarterback Jimmy Maples six times and recovered one of the Vikings’ five fumbles.

“We’re our own worst enemy,” West Vigo coach Jeff Cobb said.

Cobb was quick to point out “not all of those [interceptions] were Jimmy’s fault. Our receivers have to learn to fight for the ball.”

West Vigo trailed 13-0 at halftime, but it could have been worse. Edgewood intercepted three of Maples’ passes and recovered a fumble.

West Vigo recovered its first fumble, but was forced to punt the ball away after the 6-yard loss. Edgewood scored four plays later when Jake West ran 13 yards for the score.

On the ensuing kickoff, the Vikings put together a drive, converting on three third-and-down situations. But Edgewood’s Austin Smith made the first of three interceptions and returned it 30 yards.

West Vigo’s defense rose to the challenge, forcing Edgewood into a three-and-out series. Two plays later, Edgewood’s Smith intercepted his second pass and returned it 25 yards to the West Vigo 46. Edgewood’s Gabe Koontz scored on a 3-yard run.

Again, West Vigo’s defense forced Edgewood into a three-and-out as Isaac Boatman made two big tackles for loss. Two plays later, West Vigo lost a fumble.

West Vigo’s defense again stopped Edgewood, but the half ended with the Vikings down 13-0.

“Our defense was out on the field way too much,” Cobb said. “They wore down at the end [of the game].”

Edgewood fumbled the opening kickoff of the second half and West Vigo recovered at the Mustangs’ 34.

Maples ran for 11 yards on the first play and and Skyler Warnock broke free for the 22-yard touchdown on the next snap.

But as quick as West Vigo got back into the game, down just 13-6, Edgewood took complete control. In less than two minutes, Edgewood scored two TDs to go up 26-6 with 9:44 left in the third period.

Edgewood was driving toward another touchdown when West Vigo’s Maples picked off a Mustang pass. Maples grabbed the pass at the 5 and returned it 95 yards for the touchdown.
