TERRE HAUTE — Indiana State sophomore John Mascari has been named the MVC Men’s Cross Country Athlete of the Week. The announcement came Tuesday from the league office.

Mascari won the Indiana Intercollegiates on Friday in a time of 24 minutes, 41.69 seconds for 8,000 meters. Mascari battled IU’s Nolan Fife for 5,000 meters before opening up a lead that would take him into the finish. Mascari ended up winning the race by 23 seconds over Purdue’s Matt McClintock, who ran a national qualifier in 2012.

“John is certainly deserving of this award, as he ran a great race in Bloomington,” coach John McNichols said. “He ran a controlled race for 5,000 meters, before pulling away and then finishing strong. He made it look very easy. It’s a great honor that the Valley would recognize him, as the competition in the conference is stiffening. Sam Penzenstadler from Loyola ran a great race at Notre Dame, Zach Dahleen of Southern Illinois raced well at his home meet and Chris Burnett of Wichita State ran a strong race as well.”

Also receiving honorable-mention honors for her efforts was Indiana State junior Nicole Lucas, who placed 17th overall in the Indiana Intercollegiates with a time of 18:51.15 for 5,000 meters.

Next up for the Sycamores will be the Notre Dame Invitational in South Bend on Oct. 4.

Tri-State Pro-Am — At Idle Creek, Ray Goddard of Terre Haute placed fourth in the Open Pro Division at the Summit Golf Club in Owensboro, Ky., on Monday.

Goddard carded a 37-36 for a round of 73 at the par-72 course. Darrett Brinker of Evansville won the pro division with a 70.

Pumpkin Works event — At Paris, Ill., the Pumpkin Works 5K and one-mile runs were Sunday. A total of 78 runners participated.

5K top 5 — Matt Sebastian 21:19.5, Mari-Jean Vance 22:53.6, Graydon McDowell 23:04.4, Dan Phillips 24:18.8, Brooke Statler 24:40.4.
