Metro/Prep golf roundup: Schelsky, Kaperak winners in mini-city

TERRE HAUTE — Rich Schelsky and Ted Kaperak were two of the winners in the Terre Haute Savings Bank Mini-City championship concluded Sunday at Hulman Links.

Schelsky trailed Tom Jones by two shots in the championship division going into the final round, took the lead before losing it with three straight bogeys, then won by two shots with his par on No. 18.

Schelsky went 35-38 to shoot 73 with two birdies in the last round and finished with a 2-over-par 146 score, having 73 both days from the blue tees.

Jones was second with 148 and had 71 on Saturday at Rea Park, the only subpar round either day in the division.

Schelsky and Jones intend to compete in the Geneva Hills two-man event next weekend.

Dusty Jovanovich was third with 149 followed by Chris Cassell with 152 and Tom Webster and Scott Hess with 154 to round out the top six.

Kaperak was the winner in the senior division with rounds of 63 at Rea Park and 70 from the gold tees in the final round — the only subpar round of the day.

He went 32-31 with eight birdies and an eagle at Rea Park and was 37-33 with four birides and an Eagle at Hulman Links for a final 11-under-par 133 score.

Ian Carson was the winner in the white-tees division with 150.

Other flight winners were Chuck Adamson and Randy Kruse, while Ezra Evans and Scott McVey tied for first in the championship division first flight. Evans earlier won the Marshall Open.

Two-man events are scheduled this weekend at Geneva Hills and the following weekend at Forest Park and the interclub championship is Oct. 12 at the Country Club of Terre Haute.

  • Andy Amey: Just a small trip to talk about this time

To paraphrase Carl Spackler, the heavy stuff’s not going to come for quite awhile. So while it’s true that I’m back from a week’s vacation, it’s not time — yet — for the big vacation column.
