METRO ROUNDUP: \Swift places 2nd in Barbados

Waterford, St. Michael, Barbados — Indiana State junior Greggmar Swift ran a personal-best 13.48 seconds in the finals of the 110-meter hurdles to place second at Barbados National Track & Field Championships for the third straight year. The competition was sponsored by The Athletics Association of Barbados and conducted at the National Stadium.

“He raced very aggressive from start to finish in the finals,” ISU men’s coach John McNichols said.

Ryan Brathwaite won the 110 hurdles with a national championship record time of 13.23 with Swift second and Shane Brathwaite third in 13.50. That is the same finish as the Barbados Olympic Trails a year ago. Swift’s previous best was 13.49, which he’s done twice with the last time coming in the quarterfinals of the 2013 NCAA East Preliminary.

Swift, who had the second fastest time in the preliminaries of 13.60, will represent Barbados at the 2013 World University Games and will depart Barbados for Russia next week.

The Indiana State junior will be making his second straight appearance at the World University Games. He finished ninth in the semifinals of the 110 hurdles at the 2011 World University Games in Shenzen, China, with a time of 13.68 which was just four hundredths of a second away from advancing him to the finals.

He has represented his native Barbados well, both in collegiate competition in the United States and in world competition for his national team. Swift earned first-team All-American honors with a seventh-place finish at the 2013 NCAA outdoor championships and won his second straight MVC outdoor title in the event.

Swift had a big year in world competition in 2012 as he took bronze at the North America Central America Caribbean Under 23 Championships (NACAC), placed second at the AAB National Track & Field Championships to earn a spot on the Barbados Olympic Team, and placed fourth in the fifth heat at the 2012 London games. Besides the World University Games in 2011, Swift was sixth at the Central American and Caribbean Championships (CACC).

The Sycamore will be joined in Kazan, Russia, for the World University Games by Felisha Johnson, who will compete for Team USA in the women’s shot put.

The XXVII Summer Universiade will be held July 6 to 17 in Kazan, Russia, the capital of the Repulbic of Tatarstan. The Universiade, also known as the World University Games, is organized by the International University Sports Federation (FISU) based in Lausanne, Switzerland.
