TERRE HAUTE — Qualifying laps had concluded for the 43rd running of the Tony Hulman Classic on Friday when the weather struck for the third time this season — second time for the Classic — at the Terre Haute Action Track.

Friday night’s thunderstorm postponed the U.S. Auto Club sprint-car event to a date to be determined later, track promoter Bob Sargent said.

“We’ll get it in,” Sargent said. “Just bad luck on that weather.”

Kevin Thomas Jr. ran the fastest lap of qualifying, with Jon Stanbrough second and Sullivan County native Chase Stockon third. Stockon ranks second in the USAC sprints points race behind series veteran Dave Darland.

The series continues tonight at Odessa, Mich.

Up next at the Action Track is “NASCAR” Night on July 2, which will include an appearance by Sprint Cup star Tony Stewart.

• Rudolph falls short — At Des Moines, Iowa, Indiana State freshman Kimyanna Rudolph had three good attempts at the opening height but missed on each one and failed to place in the Women’s Pole Vault Junior competition Friday in the USA Track & Field Outdoor Championships at Drake University.

Rudolph was one of 13 athletes who competed in the event, but only seven cleared the opening height of 12 feet, 51⁄2 inches. The Sycamore freshman had cleared her collegiate best of 13-51⁄4 in the Auburn Tiger Track Classic earlier in the outdoor season and competed in the Women’s Pole Vault Elite competition in the Sycamore Pole Vault last Saturday when she tied for fifth by clearing 12-111⁄2.

Megan Clark (unattached) won the competition by clearing 13-71⁄4 on her second attempt. Bonnie Draxler (AP Vaulters), Madison Mills (South Dakota) and Emily Brigham (unattached) each cleared 13-31⁄2 with Draxler judged second, Mills third and Brigham fourth.

ISU senior Felisha Johnson will compete in the Women’s Shot Put Senior at 2 p.m. EDT today, with former Sycamore and current Indiana State volunteer coach Kylie Hutson battling in the Women’s Pole Vault Senior at 2:30 p.m. Sunday.
