Sanchez stays hot to lead Rex to victory

TERRE HAUTE — Hot seems to be the right temperature for Terre Haute Rex Ricky Sanchez.

After going 3-for-5 in the Rex win on Tuesday at Hannibal, Sanchez drove in four runs with a two hits Wednesday in Terre Haute’s 6-5 win over the same Cavemen at Bob Warn Stadium.

The win allowed the Rex to maintain a one-game lead on Quincy in the Prospect League West Division standings.

Sanchez, a catcher and outfielder out of Notre Dame, started the night hitting .355 and was 2-for-3 at the plate with a double.

Hannibal got on the scoreboard first when Mattingly Romanin doubled off the left field wall and scored on a base hit up the middle by Zach Nichols.

The Rex tied the score 1-1 when Kyle Kempf extended his hitting streak to 11 games with a double down the left field line. Kempf, who started the night hitting a league leading .391, moved to third on a ground ball out to second and scored on Sanchez sacrifice fly to right field.

Sanchez put the Rex on top to stay in the third. Andrew Cope raced around to second base on a two-out error by Hannibal and scored on Sanchez’s single to right field.

The Rex took a 5-1 lead in the fifth inning with the help of two Cavemen errors and a batter hit by pitch. With two on base, Sanchez doubled into the left-field gap and came around to score on a Hannibal’s second throwing error.

But the Rex needed every run they scored. After starting pitcher Kyle Zimmerman (3-0) left the mound at the end of six innings, the Rex used three pitchers to get the final nine outs of the game.

The Rex brought on Bryan Nacke to pitch in the eighth inning and Hannibal took advantage of his lack of control and a double to deep center field to score two runs. That cut the Rex lead to 5-3 with one out.

Rex got out of the eighth inning jam when Nate Arnold came out of the bullpen to get a strikeout and fly ball to end the threat.
