Terre Haute North, Terre Haute South win Top-Off Tournament semifinal games

WEST TERRE HAUTE — Terre Haute North outscored scrappy West Vigo 14-2 in the third quarter to pull away for a 45-22 win Thursday in the first semifinal game of the Terre Haute Savings Bank Tip-Off Tournament for girls high school basketball at West Vigo.

Terre Haute South overwhelmed North Central 69-18 in the second semifinal.

North (2-0) and South (2-0) will play for the championship at 5:30 p.m. today at West Vigo High School. There is no consolation game.

Layne Curley led North’s second win of the season and the tournament with 17 points, including 3 of 4 from 3-point range. Adrienne Pritchard followed with 11 points, 14 rebounds, five blocked shots and five steals.

West Vigo (1-1) did not have a player score in double figures.

West Vigo played with North into the second quarter. North led 13-7 after one quarter and 21-14 at halftime.

“Ryan [Easton] does a great job with [the West Vigo] girls and we got outhustled the first half. We just gave [the Patriots] a challenge at halftime,” North coach Mike Allen said.

North’s third quarter stretched the margin to 35-16. The Vikings scored just two points in the eight-minute quarter and were 0 for 11 shooting from the floor. North was 5 for 8.

Curley, Pritchard and Abby Howes accounted for the first five points of the fourth quarter as the Patriots took a 40-16 lead.

In the second semifinal game, South scored the first 12 points against North Central and never looked back. North Central finally got on the scoreboard at the 3:12 mark of the first period on an inside basket by Aubrey Evans.

Led by Kylie Fendrick and Lauren Perrelle, the Braves built a 20-6 first-quarter lead and 34-11 halftime advantage. The Braves held a commanding 49-14 lead going into the fourth quarter.
