Metro roundup: ISU track ready for MVC indoors

TERRE HAUTE — The Indiana State track and field teams will head to Cedar Falls, Iowa, this weekend for the Missouri Valley Conference indoor championships.

The men are defending champions and the women were runners-up a year ago.

“I always enjoy the conference meet and this is definitely my favorite meet of the year,” ISU men’s coach John McNichols said. “It is always a highlight of every season, but can be nerve wrecking for the athletes, coaches, and staff, but also very exciting. This particular meet I believe our team is sitting in a good position.”

The men will go into the meet ranked first according to the pre-championship poll, as they received five No. 1 votes and 46 points. Wichita State was voted to finish second with one No. 1 vote and 42 points, Loyola was third with 33 points, Southern Illinois was fourth with one No. 1 vote and 27 points, Illinois State was fifth with 24 points, Northern Iowa was sixth with 16 points and Drake was voted to finish seventh with 8 points.

The team won its first MVC indoor championships in 2011 and followed that with another in 2013.

The women will go into the meet also as the pre-championship favorite, as they received four No. 1 votes to take the top spot with 75 points. Southern Illinois received two No. 1 votes to take second with 71 points, Wichita State was voted third with three No. 1 votes and 65 points, Illinois State was voted fourth with 48 points, Loyola was voted fifth with 46, Northern Iowa was voted sixth with 38, Missouri State was voted seventh with 31, Drake was voted eighth with 16 and Bradley rounded out the conference voting receiving 15 for ninth.

“The team is excited and this is what we have been working for all season long,” said ISU women’s coach Angela Martin said. “I’d prefer to not be the favorites, because you would like to go in there and get the job done with maybe less pressure on you, but we are so we’re going to go out there and try to do our best and manage the meet is well as we can.”

The meet will have several Sycamores going into their events as the favorites, including Katie Wise in the women’s 60-meter dash and 200-meter dashes, John Mascari in the men’s 3,000 and 5,000 runs, Carmelia Stewart in the women’s 60 hurdles and triple jump, Greggmar Swift in the men’s 60 hurdles, Byron Ferrell in the men’s pole vault, Kimyanna Rudolph in the women’s pole vault and Mary Theisen in the women’s shot put.

Day 1 of the two-day meet will begin at 10:30 a.m. EST Saturday with the multi events, followed by the women’s weight throw at 2:15 p.m. The first track event will be the mile preliminaries at 5 and will conclude with the men’s distance medley relay at 8:40 p.m. Sunday’s action will begin at 10:30 a.m. with the second day of the heptathlon.
