A shocker on the road

ISU women beat Wichita State behind Grier’s scoring outburst

WICHITA, Kan. — For one day, at least, the Indiana State women’s basketball team found another scoring option.

Junior Jasmine Grier, who entered the game averaging 2.6 points per game, erupted for a career-high 22 points, hitting 7 of 9 shots from the field and 5 of 7 from 3-point range, as the Sycamores went into Koch Arena on Sunday and beat Missouri Valley Conference leader Wichita State 63-51.

It was ISU’s first win at Koch Arena in five seasons and lifted the Sycamores within two games of the Shockers. Indiana State is now 15-10 overall, 10-4 in league play while Wichita is 22-4 and 13-2.

Bilqis Abdul-Qaadir added 12 points and a career-high 11 assists for her first ISU double-double and the visitors outscored the Shockers 42-29 in the second half.

ISU shot 53 percent for the game and was 18 for 28 — 64.3 percent — in those last 20 minutes. Wichita shot just 34 percent overall, 26 percent in the first half, as the Sycamores had their second straight outstanding defensive performance.

The win snapped a 12-game home winning streak and an eight-game MVC home winning streak for Wichita State.

ISU jumped out to an early 16-6 Sunday but ran into foul trouble, with both Anna Munn and Chelsea Small picking up third fouls before halftime. Wichita closed out the half with a 13-1 run to take a 22-21 lead at intermission.

A jumper by Grier with 17:27 left in the game gave ISU the lead to stay and started a 9-2 run for the Sycamores, who led by as many as 17 points in the second half.

The win was the first at Wichita for coach Teri Moren and gave ISU its first sweep of the Missouri State-Wichita State road trip in seven seasons.

ISU has its final homestand this coming week, hosting Bradley on Friday and Loyola for Senior Day next Sunday.
