Bloomington North pulls away from Terre Haute North

BLOOMINGTON — For one half of high school basketball Thursday night, Terre Haute North played with its host and future Conference Indiana rival Bloomington North. But there are four quarters and two halves and the Cougars turned the Patriots’ turnovers into a 65-44 rout the second half.

North (8-8) committed 21 turnovers, seven in the third quarter when Bloomington North scored 22 points.

The Cougars turned a six-point halftime lead into a 47-33 cushion going into the fourth quarter.

“I’m very disappointed we didn’t take better care of the basketball. Bloomington North is a very team and they had a lot to do with that,” Patriots coach Todd Woelfle said.

The Patriots were led by Keshuan Sandifer with 11 points; he was the only North player in double figures. Charlie Aimone had nine points through three quarters but didn’t score in the final eight minutes.

Bloomington North (11-7) has now won seven of its last 10 games. The Cougars placed four players in double figures, led by Saikou Jallow, who sliced through the Patriots’ defense for 21 points on lay ups. Grant Sims had 12 points, Kaleb Ferrell 11 and Tyler Truesdel 10.

The Patriots hung with the more experienced Cougars through the first half with Aimone hitting two threes and Kurashima one and Sandifer three free throws. On the defensive end, the Patriots kept the Cougars out of their running game.

“When we got them in the half-court [game] and we were patient offensively we did some good things,” Woelfle said.

The Patriots trailed 12-11 after one quarter and were down just 25-19 at halftime.

North turned the ball over three times to open the third quarter and the Cougars’ Jallow and Truesdel converted the errors into a quick 32-22 lead. The Cougars picked off the Patriots’ passes on the perimeter and started running. Then came the full-court press and more turnovers.

“That’s been the story of our season,” Woelfle said.

Bloomington North led 47-33 going into the fourth quarter. Sandifer and Brian Stevens each scored four points for the Patriots in the final period.
