West Vigo ends six-game slide

MECCA — West Vigo had lost six straight going into Monday night’s makeup boys basketball game at Riverton Parke, which had dropped its last 12 in a row.

Something had to give.

The Panthers jumped out to an 11-5 lead after one quarter, but West Vigo rallied to take a 20-18 halftime lead and never trailed again in recording a 55-40 victory.

“I thought we played well defensively tonight,” West Vigo coach Joe Boehler said. “We created some problems with our pressure, and we got some easy looks out of it.”

RP got five first-quarter points from Hunter Falls and four more from Tanner Edge in controlling the first period. West Vigo got back-to-back hoops from freshman Austin Sappingfield to open the second period and balanced scoring for the rest of the period, gong ahead for good on a Alex West basket with two seconds left before halftime.

The Vikings – who put nine players in the scoring column – got points from three different players to open the second half on a 6-0 run, and increased their lead to 32-29 with 5:15 left in the third period before the Panthers got back on track.

Seven straight points, including three from Brogan Thomas, brought the hosts within 32-26 with 31 seconds left in the third quarter.

Freshman Corey Vickers, who had a career-high 11 points, hit a 3-pointer with 17 seconds left in the period to help the Vikings take a 35-27 lead into the fourth quarter.

A basket by RP’s Michael Lowe to open the final period cut the gap to six, but West Vigo put the game away by scoring the next nine points.

“We were able to play a lot of people, which was really good,” said Boehler, whose team is in a stretch of four games in eight days due to numerous makeup dates. “Corey gave us a big boost off the bench. He plays best against a zone, and this was a good game for him.”

Vickers added five more points in the fourth quarter, including five straight as West Vigo took its biggest lead of the night at 53-33, and led West Vigo in scoring.

Tyler Hayes and Keagan McClain each added eight, Grant Daley had seven and Hayden Corenflos chipped in with six in a balanced attack.

Riverton was led by Lowe with 11, while Edge added eight, Falls had seven and Thomas added six.

  • Andy Amey: Just a small trip to talk about this time

To paraphrase Carl Spackler, the heavy stuff’s not going to come for quite awhile. So while it’s true that I’m back from a week’s vacation, it’s not time — yet — for the big vacation column. Trips to Noblesville, Brunswick and Reelsville, while providing some nice family time, don’t really have the cachet to fill newspaper space.
