Cougars’ pressure, hot shooting stifle Knights

BLOOMINGTON — When Northview scores 65 points, puts three players in double figures and shoots 66 percent from the floor, it usually means the Knights win. Not Friday at Bloomington North.

The host Cougars beat the Knights’ defense down the court and applied pressure everywhere in a 78-65 high school basketball win.

Northview hit 27 of 41 from the floor with Ethan Whitson netting 27 points inside. Christian Ellis hit 4 of 5 3-pointers in a 16-point effort and Jim Mace had 13 points.

Bloomington North, shooting 68 percent (27 for 40), was led by 6-foot-3 senior Grant Sims and 6-2 senior Grant Truesdel, each with 20 points.

“Interior-wise, we did a very good job with guys who were very physical with us. We still got the ball where we wanted to. On the perimeter they were very physical and we still got the ball where we wanted to so we executed very, very well against a team that was as quick to the ball as anybody we’ve played all year,” Northview coach Clint Weddle said.

Through the first half, every time Northview scored Bloomington North raced down court for a layup.

“We did not recognize the people that were getting in behind us, from the weak side. And [Bloomington North] did a good job as far as cutting from the weak side. We’re getting better at that when [the ball is] in the half court, but that is the first time we’ve seen somebody do that as far as the full court, as far as literally cut in behind you,” Weddle said.

Northview got out to a 6-2 lead with Whitson and Mace passing to each other over the defense. The lead changed hands twice before the Cougars went ahead 9-8 with 4:30 to play in the first quarter.

Bloomington North led 17-14 going into the second quarter and stretched the lead to 36-25 midway through the period.

Northview’s Ellis hit a 3, Mace a 2 and Whitson two free throws to get the Knights within 40-32 at halftime.

Northview never let Bloomington North put the game away. Ellis hit a 3 and Whitson back-to-back baskets that got the Knights within six at 47-41 with four minutes to play in the third quarter. But that was as close as the Knights got. Bloomington North closed the third quarter with a 7-0 run to lead 61-48 going into the final period.

Ellis hit a 3 and Whitson added a field goal and free throw to bring the Knights within 61-54 with 6:45 left. Again, Bloomington North hit two straight baskets and pulled out to a 14-point lead.
