METRO ROUNDUP: ISU football set to announce 2014 recruiting class

TERRE HAUTE — Second-year Indiana State football coach Mike Sanford invites all fans to Hulman Center today as he and his staff will announce members of the program’s 2014 recruiting class on National Signing Day at 6:15 p.m.

The west doors (Eighth Street) will open at 6 p.m. and all attendees should use either the stairs at that entrance or the elevator to proceed down to the Varsity Club Room at floor level. Attendees will need a ticket for the basketball game against nationally ranked Wichita State for admission to the football event. Tipoff against the Shockers is slated for 8:05 p.m.

Sanford and his staff will begin to introduce the ISU football class at 6:15 p.m. Video highlights of the signees will be played on a large projector screen in the Varsity Club Room and short biographies on each will be distributed. Coaches will make comments to those in attendance about the signing-day class as well as provide an update on the program heading into spring practices.

Complete National Signing Day coverage also will be provided on GoSycamores.com. A list of signees as well as their bios and links to online video highlight packages will be posted as national letters-of-intent arrive into the Sycamore football office and are certified by the ISU Compliance Office and the Missouri Valley Football Conference.

As a reminder, due to NCAA regulations, no signees or their family members may attend this event.

• Pomeroy honored — Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College freshman Ja’Breena Gardner was named the U.S. Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) Women’s Division I Player of the Week, according to an announcement from the national office Tuesday.

Last week, Gardner led the Pomeroys in scoring in their 83-24 victory over USCAA member Andrews University. In that game, Gardner scored 16 points on 50-percent shooting from the field. She also posted nine steals, eight assists and one block. Furthermore, she currently leads the USCAA Division I in steals with 4.6 per contest while averaging 22.2 minutes played.

Through 19 games, Gardner leads the Pomeroys in total points scored (278), points per game (14.5), assists (50) and steals (84).

The Indianapolis native has earned this honor for the first time in her career.

• Rose men tabbed for 3rd — The Rose-Hulman men’s team has been picked to finish third in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference this season, according to a preseason poll of league coaches.

The Engineers received 59 points to place third in the poll, five ahead of fourth-place Franklin.

Earlham earned the top spot with 81 points and all nine first-place votes. Transylvania was picked second with 72 points.

Rose and Franklin were picked third and fourth, followed by Hanover and Manchester. Defiance, Anderson and Mount St. Joseph rounded out the poll.

Rose-Hulman finished fourth in the league at 6-3 in conference play last season and recorded its 16th consecutive season at .500 or above by finishing 11-8 overall.

The 2014 team features the return of four varsity letterwinners and five newcomers, including multiple freshmen who will compete for playing time at the top of the playing order. Senior Nate Moore played in the No. 3 singles spot last year, sophomore Matthew Conrad finished 14-4 as the primary No. 4 singles player and sophomore Erin Miller split time with junior Ray Montgomery at the No. 6 singles position last season.

Rose hosts Vincennes University on Saturday in the Wabash Valley Tennis Center. The official Division III portion of the schedule begins with a home match against Alma on Feb. 22.
