MVC-leading Sycamore women win 5th straight

CARBONDALE, Ill. — Indiana State’s women remained undefeated in Missouri Valley Conference basketball on Sunday, posting a second straight lopsided road win by defeating Southern Illinois 63-44.

ISU is now 10-6 overall, 5-0 in conference play. It’s the longest MVC winning streak in coach Teri Moren’s career and first for the Sycamores since the 2008-2009 season.

Bilqis Abdul-Qaadir and Racheal Mahan had 15 points each to pace the Sycamores on Sunday. Leading scorer Anna Munn only had seven points but had a game-high nine rebounds and four assists.

Six different Sycamores had two steals each as ISU forced 27 turnovers on its way to wrapping up a successful road swing that also included a 67-46 win at Evansville on Thursday.

The Salukis were quick out of the gate on Sunday, taking an 8-2 lead in the first three minutes.

ISU didn’t get the lead until a pair of free throws by Munn made it 11-10 with 13:39 left in the half, and a three-point play by Azia Washington put SIU back on top 16-14 with nine minutes left before intermission.

Munn’s 3-pointer assisted by Chelsea Small at 7:57 put the Sycamores ahead to stay at 17-16, but it was still a one-point game until ISU closed out the first half with a 9-2 run for a 31-23 advantage.

The Salukis came within six early in the second half and were still only down 47-40 with eight minutes to play, but then the Sycamores put the game away with a 16-2 run before SIU got the game’s last two points.

  • Andy Amey: Just a small trip to talk about this time

To paraphrase Carl Spackler, the heavy stuff’s not going to come for quite awhile. So while it’s true that I’m back from a week’s vacation, it’s not time — yet — for the big vacation column. Trips to Noblesville, Brunswick and Reelsville, while providing some nice family time, don’t really have the cachet to fill newspaper space.
