First place in HCAC up for grabs today at Rose-Hulman

Engineers play host to Mount St. Joseph

TERRE HAUTE — Rose-Hulman will play host to Mount St. Joseph in a matchup of the top two teams in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference men’s basketball standings at 3 p.m. today in Hulbert Arena.

Rose has won eight consecutive games to improve to 11-3 overall and 6-1 in HCAC play. Mount St. Joseph has rattled off four straight victories to move to 9-4 and 6-1 respectively.

Rose-Hulman and Mount St. Joseph enter the weekend tied for the lead in conference play, one game ahead of Defiance and Hanover. The Engineers are the defending HCAC regular-season and conference tournament champions.

Sophomore Jimmy Miller scored a career-high 32 points to help lead Rose past Franklin 74-56 on Wednesday. Miller also hit the two game-winning free throws in last Saturday’s 58-57 victory at Defiance.

Senior Julian Strickland continues to lead the Engineers in scoring (21.7 points per game), with Miller adding 10.7. The starting lineup during the winning streak has also included Alec Houpt (6.6), Tyler Duffy (6.0) and Jordy Martin (5.9). The deep roster includes eight players averaging over four points per game.

Mount St. Joseph has enjoyed a program turnaround under third-year head coach Toby Carrigan. After qualifying for the HCAC tournament for the first time in seven years last season, the Lions are well on their way to the first winning season since 2006-07.

Mount St. Joseph has defeated Manchester, Bluffton, Earlham and Hanover during its four-game January winning streak to move to the top of the league standings. Joel Scudder leads three players averaging in double figures at 18.0 ppg, followed by Mark Allen (13.2) and David Mann (11.4).

Rose-Hulman and Mount St. Joseph are tied at 7-7 in their series history, which began when the Engineers joined the HCAC in 2006-07. The Engineers won both of last year’s meetings, 52-36 in Cincinnati and 60-39 in Hulbert Arena.
