Metro roundup: Lady Rex take Ohio softball tournament

DAYTON, Ohio — The Lady Rex 18u softball team had a 5-1 record over the weekend to win the Ohio Premier tournament.

The team averaged nearly eight runs per game, hitting three homers and batting .344. Leading hitters were Shelby Edington at .579 and Brittany Dalton at .381. Lexi Higgins had three steals and Mariah Stout two as the Lady Rex stole 11 times during the tournament.

Coming out of the losers’ bracket on Sunday, the Lady Rex beat the Cincinnati Mustangs 4-0; avenged their only loss by beating the Ohio Edge 5-2; and won the championship game 12-10 in extra innings over the F/P Diamonds.

Mackenzie McGregor had a three-run homer in the championship game, while Brittany Dalton hit a tie-breaking double in the ninth inning and McGregor added another RBI that inning.

• Swift back on national team
— Indiana State’s Greggmar Swift earned a spot on the Barbados national team by placing second in 110-meter high hurdles over the weekend at the Barbados Championships.

The 2012 Barbados Olympian, who completed his ISU career at the NCAA Outdoor Championships recently, had the meet’s best time of 13.35 seconds in the preliminaries but finished second to Shane Brathwaite — 13.39 to 13.37 — in the finals.

Swift will compete for Barbados next month at the Commonwealth Games in Scotland.

Auto racing

• Stanbrough wins again
— At Sun Prairie, Wis., Jon Stanbrough his second straight U.S. Auto Club sprint car feature on Sunday at Angell Park Speedway.

The driver from Avon led the final nine laps to win the 30-lap main.

Sullivan native Chase Stockon led the first 21 laps but flipped; he was dazed but uninjured.

Brady Bacon was fast qualifier and took fourth. He has a 48-point lead over Dave Darland in the sprint point totals going into a July 4 race at Lincoln Park Speedway.
