Reed signs with Astros

Terre Haute native earns another national honor

HOUSTON — A.J. Reed’s Wednesday was already pretty good when he was named Baseball America’s College Player of the Year in the morning.

In the afternoon, it got even better for the Terre Haute native.

The Houston Astros, who drafted Reed with the first pick of the second round in last week’s Major League Baseball draft, announced that they had agreed to a deal with Reed. According to several sources, Reed signed his deal for $1.35 million.

“A.J. Reed was one of the best college bats in the draft this year, and his accomplishments speak for themselves,” said Astros scouting director Mike Elias as reported by the Houston Chronicle. “What impresses us most with A.J. is his ability to use his power to both fields, his defensive prowess at first base and the enthusiasm with which he plays the game.

“He’s going to be a fun player to watch and should immediately establish himself as one of our top power prospects in the minors,” Elias added.

The Chronicle also reported that Reed would be assigned to Tri-City in the short season Class A New York-Penn League and would be its starting first baseman. The Tri-City Valley Cats play in Troy, N.Y., in the Albany, N.Y. Capital Region. The Valley Cats are managed by former major league infielder Ed Romero.

Reed’s Baseball America was the second he’s received so far during college baseball’s postseason. He was also named Collegiate Baseball’s Player of the Year in late May.

Reed — a first-team All-American — is also a finalist for the Golden Spikes Award and the Dick Howser Trophy. Reed could become the Southeastern Conference’s third unanimous national player of the year, joining Dave Magadan (1983) and David Price (2007).

Reed, who led the NCAA in homers (23), slugging (.735) and OPS (1.211), is the first player in Kentucky history to earn national player of the year honors.

Reed was the SEC leader in wins (12), RBI (73), on-base percentage (.476) and walks (49). Reed finished 2014 with a .336 average, with 18 doubles, one triple and a 49-48 walk-strikeout ratio.

Maybe they should play this at Valle Field. It’s called Terre Haute Boys & Girls Club Park now, but the venerable ballpark was the site of some classic high school baseball regional games in the 1970s when coach Don Jennings and Terre Haute North’s local dynasty fought off stiff challenges from the best the rest of the Wabash Valley had to offer.
