Pair of Sycamores selected in Major League Baseball draft

TERRE HAUTE — With Tyler Wampler holding down shortstop, the baseball teams the West Terre Haute native has played on have piled up a lot of victories through the years. He helped Indiana State qualify for two NCAA Tournaments, and led West Vigo to a Class 3A state runner-up finish.

That’s not a coincidence, and Major League Baseball scouts can see his potential to play the position at the highest level.

Wampler was drafted Saturday by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 17th round (519th overall).

“Going into this year, I just wanted to have a lot of fun. Whatever happened, happened,” Wampler said. “The team had a successful year and I happened to have a good year as well. It's my dream come true, I get the shot to give it a shot at the next level.”

Named the 2014 Missouri Valley Conference Defensive Player of the Year, Wampler compiled a .966 fielding percentage with eight errors, 159 assists and 68 putouts.

Starting all 52 games he played for the Sycamores in 2014, Wampler batted .275 with five doubles, one triple, 29 runs scored, 16 runs batted in and 12 stolen bases in 15 attempts.

Wampler was one of two Indiana State baseball players were chosen in the 2014 Major League Baseball draft Saturday. Junior catcher Mike Fitzgerald went to the San Diego Padres in the 27th round (807th overall).

Meanwhile, Fitzgerald batted .293 with three home runs, 26 RBIs, 25 runs, 10 doubles and seven steals in 10 attempts. He had a fielding percentage of .984 with five errors and 32 assists.

The Sycamores finished 35-18 overall after earning a trip to the NCAA Bloomington Regional and 14-7 in the MVC regular season, good for second place.

Wampler spent Saturday monitoring the draft with family and friends at home.

“We didn’t really know what to expect,” Wampler said. [The Dodgers] had shown some interest. Had talked to an area scout for half the season. I’m super excited.”

Wampler will get the details of his next assignment as soon as today. He expects to fly to Arizona for a mini-camp and play for a short-season team this summer.

Fitzgerald could not be reached for comment.
