Rose can’t survive foe’s comeback, falls in NCAA tourney

MOLINE, Ill. — Rose-Hulman led World Series-bound St. Thomas in the ninth inning of NCAA Division III college baseball regional play on Wednesday and had an early 3-0 lead on the Tommies on Sunday, but the Engineers finally succumbed 9-4 and were eliminated from further play.

Surprise winners of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference tournament a week earlier, the Engineers beat top-ranked Webster, 15th-ranked Buena Vista and neighborhood rival DePauw in a 1-0 game late Saturday before falling in Sunday’s championship round at Augustana College.

Sixth-ranked St. Thomas, which got three ninth-inning runs in its first-round 4-2 win over Rose, heads to the World Series with a 37-7 record, while Rose finished 29-18. The three tournament wins matched Rose-Hulman's entire baseball history in five previous apperances in the national tournament.

Rose took a 1-0 lead in the second inning Sunday when Josh Hoeing singled, advanced on a throwing error and scored following a bunt single by Donnie Waters and an RBI hit by Patrick Klima. The Engineers left the bases loaded, however.

It was 3-0 in the fourth after walks to Warren Whithaus and Andrew Benitez, a run-scoring passed ball and an RBI single by Kody Alayon brought in two runs, but again Rose-Hulman left three on base.

Karson Nixon pitched four strong innings on just two days rest, giving up the first St. Thomas run before giving way to the bullpen. The Tommies got within 3-2 in the sixth, added three runs to take the lead in the seventh and put the game away with four more runs in the eighth.

Alayon, Hoeing and Waters paced the Rose-Hulman offensive effort with two hits each.

Daniel Sutherland, who pitched a three-hit shutout in the 1-0 win over DePauw, and Caleb Kissel, who led the Engineers with nine hits in the five regional games, were named to the all-tournament team.
