METRO SPORTS: Marshall girls top Charleston in tourney

ROBINSON, Ill. — Ariana Kuhn had 12 points and seven rebounds and Kaydie Grooms added 10 points and eight rebounds to lead Marshall over Charleston 48-14 in the Robinson Thanksgiving Tournament for girls high school basketball Friday.

    Phegley is a third-time All-Star in the International League, while Marshall, Ill., native Derek Eitel was named to his first Triple-A All-Star game. The Rose-Hulman graduate and right-handed relief pitcher for the Reno Aces has put up impressive numbers in the Pacific Coast League. Eitel has a 2.70 earned-run average with 60 strikeouts in 46 2/3 innings for the Diamondbacks’ top minor-league team.

  • Thoroughbreds complete race card at Martinsville

    Thoroughbred races were on Friday’s card to wind up four days of Illinois racing at the Martinsville Agricultural Fair. Horses owned by Bart Baird and Lance and Stacey Holsapple won all six of the thoroughbred races on the card with two other features run for ponies and mules.
