Rex stay atop West Division with gem of comeback vs. Quincy

TERRE HAUTE — A five-run fifth inning and two big home runs helped the Terre Haute Rex protect their West Division first-place spot in Prospect League baseball Sunday evening at Bob Warn Field.

The visiting Quincy Gems, who beat the Rex 7-4 on Saturday night to pull within a half game of the lead, had a 3-0 advantage Sunday going into the bottom of the fifth inning, but wound up losing by the same final score four innings later.

Red-hot Tony Rosselli drew a walk to start the fifth for Terre Haute, and Kaden Moore was hit by a pitch. Matt Chavarria doubled to drive in the first run, a second run scored when Ryan Sabo was safe on an error, and Cayce Bredlau’s third homer of the season gave the home team a sudden 5-3 lead.

Quincy cut the lead to 5-4 with a run in the top of the seventh, but the Rex got two insurance tallies in the eighth.

Zach Welz opened the inning with his first homer of the season, and Rosselli followed with a triple. Moore was hit by a pitch again — for the third time in the game — before Rosselli scored on Sabo’s one-out grounder.

Chavarria moved from shortstop to the mound in the ninth inning and recorded his second save of the season.

The Rex have a 7:05 p.m. home game today against Danville, then go to Quincy to meet the Gems twice — the first the completion of an earlier suspended game — on Tuesday.

The Terre Haute Rex pitching staff ranks fifth among the 12 teams in the Prospect League in earned-run average this season and first in the league with only four home runs allowed all summer.
