Martinsville harness racing heats up as Patton posts 2 victories

MARTINSVILLE, Ill. — Nine heats made up the first day of Illinois harness racing Tuesday at the Martinsville Agricultural Fair.

Freddie Patton Jr. was the only driver with two winners. He was the leading driver and trainer on the fair circuit in 2013 and is the leader in both categories this season.

His first winning drive came in the fourth race, the best of the day, with Mr Three Quarters edging NJ’s Big Deal for its first win of the season and 11th career win in the 3-year-up colt pace in 2 minutes, 02 seconds, the best time of the day.

Mr Three Quarters went from last to first in the fourth race.

Patton’s other winning drive was in the 3-year-old colt pace. Tower Power was an easy winner in winning for the third time this year and for the 19th time in two years in 2:04.

Cypress Hill Rose, driven by Clay Simpson, upped its 2014 mark to 3-0 by winning the 3-year-old filly pace in 2:03, leading all the way in the race.

Track conditions were good considering heavy morning rains.

Veterans handled announcing duties with Tim Wilson Jr. on the stage and Carl Becker calling the races.

More racing is slated today and Thursday with the Great Midwest Pace and Great Midwest Trot on Thursday’s card.

Thoroughbred racing is scheduled for Friday. Post time is 1 p.m. CDT each day.
