Defending women’s city champ off to strong start

TERRE HAUTE — Play got started in pleasant conditions Friday at Hulman Links for the Terre Haute women’s city golf tournament.

Cara Stuckey shot 75 to pace qualifying and determine first-round matchups for match play starting today and winding up Monday. Stuckey had three birdies in her round at the course where sodding has been completed.

Stuckey has won the city nine times and is the defending champ, having won in 2011; the city was not played last year. She will face Eileen Mann in her match today.

Stuckey is the girls golf and basketball coach at Terre Haute South. One of her former players in the field is Alexandra Pickens, who will be a freshman at Eastern Illinois and play golf.

Pickens was second low in qualifying with 83 followed by Megan Ramer with 88 and former South player Morgan Patterson.

Ramer  will be a freshman at Terre Haute North and received the Travis J. Smith Outstanding Junior Golfer award in the junior city tournament.

Josie Swalls was low in putts in the qualifying with 31.

Wilson a winner — At Idle Creek, Justin Wilson was one of the winners in a junior golf tournament played Friday.

Boys and girls competed in three divisions of the tournament.

Wilson, Darin Pemberton and Braxton McIntyre all shot 42 to tie for low score in the 15-17 division. Wilson won a playoff to take first.

Other winners were Jacob English and Danny Smith.

Tour event played — At the Country Club of Terre Haute, 70 juniors competed in a Mountain Dew Tour event played Thursday at the course.

Two winners were Brady Sappenfield of Martinsville in the boys 17-19 division and Kinley Lingenfelter in the girls 13-14 division, edging Megan Ramer of Terre Haute by one shot. Lingfelter has Terre Haute ties; her father played for Terre Haute South.

Other Terre Haute golfers taking second were Andrew Behnke in boys 17-19 and Alexandra Pickens in girls 17-19 while Cam Lewellyn took fourth in boys 15-16, losing a scorecard playoff for third.

A junior tourney will be played today at Idle Creek and qualifying is slated for the players in the women's city tournament at Hulman Links.

The junior interclub will be played August 16 at the Allendale course.

    The West Virginia Miners tallied the go-ahead run with two outs in the top of the 11th inning Wednesday night at Bob Warn Field, then held Terre Haute scoreless in the bottom half of the frame to post a 4-3 baseball victory and shove the Rex into a virtual tie for first place with the Quincy Gems in the Prospect League West Division second-half standings.
    Terre Haute is now 18-8 in the second half, while Quincy is 19-9.
