TERRE HAUTE — The stage is set for a shootout in the final round of the Show-Me’s/Terre Haute Golf Association men’s city golf tournament to be played today at Hulman Links.
Chris Cassell had the low round in Saturday’s rain-delayed action at Rea Park with a 6-under-par 66 and is the city leader with his 1-over-par 214 score.
Phillip Myers is second at 215, Tom Jones third at 216 and Ted Kaperak fourth at 219. The leaders will tee off at 11:20 a.m.
Rain halted play for about 20 minutes in the early afternoon and a second rain delayed the finish for the final three groups on the course.
Cassell bogeyed the first two holes, then went 34-32 for his 66. He had seven birdies and an eagle in the round.
“After starting out bogey-bogey, I stayed calm and didn’t get mad. I think that was the key,” said Cassell, who has won one title and has often been in contention.
Myers and Jones shared the lead after two rounds. Myers was 35-35 in carding 70 on Saturday. He had four birdies in the round.
“The last three holes were challenging after the rain,” said the Purdue graduate.
Jones was 34-37 in shooting 71. “You play the first three rounds to be in a good position for the final round. Mission accomplished,” said the seven-time winner.
Kaperak went 36-36 for his second 72 score of the tourney. “I had to grind it out all day … I had a couple bad judgments,” said the defending champ and nine-time winner who was glad to be in the feature foursome for the final round.
Devon Klutey is in the second flight of the championship division and had the second low score with 70. He had five birdies and was 35-35.
Klutey trails Bo Higgins by one shot in the second flight.
