TERRE HAUTE — Clinton Post 140 felt like it won two American Legion baseball games Friday night, but got credit for one.

Kam Weyrauch made a diving catch in right field in the 10th inning to preserve a 12-11 Clinton victory over Washington Post 120-121 in sectional play at Terre Haute North.

Clinton (15-10) now plays Terre Haute Wayne Newton Post 346 at noon today in the winners’ bracket game of the double-elimination tournament. The winner advances to the championship game at 1 p.m. Sunday.

Washington (5-12) plays Sullivan (9-16-1) at 3:30 p.m. today. Then at 8 p.m., loser of the first game plays the winner of the second for the right to play in the championship game Sunday.

First- and second-place teams in the sectional advance to the regional next weekend, also at Terre Haute North.

Clinton coach Ron Alabaugh didn’t care if his team had to play the St. Louis Cardinals on Saturday. He was just proud that Post 140 came from behind to win.

“[Washington] came back and bit us. They tied it up and we had to do it all over again, but we pulled it out so I’m pretty happy about it,” Alabaugh said.

Clinton scored six runs on six hits in the fourth inning to lead 8-1 after four complete innings. Post 140 was playing like a team that could win in seven innings.

But Washington scored two in the fifth and four in the sixth, one in the seventh and took the lead in the ninth inning when Brady Like led off with a solo home run.

“I told them early we got to put this gas pedal down and keep pushing and pushing because this team will come back, and they certainly did. They made it a ballgame,” Alabaugh said.

Clinton tied the game 9-9 in the ninth when John Brown led off with a single and pinch-runner Tyler Rapp moved around to third on two Washington errors. Rapp came home on a wild pitch.

Kaden Lawson, bound for Indiana State, led off the 11th inning with a solo home run. Lawson had four hits, including two doubles, and four RBIs.

Clinton didn’t stop at one run. Kam Weyrauch singled and came around to score on Rapp’s double into right field. Rapp scored on a Tyler Smith double, giving Clinton a 12-9 going into the bottom of the 10th.

Washington scored two runs when winning pitcher Jordan Branz walked two batters and Jake Bedwell belted a double to score both. It took a diving catch by Weyrauch in right field to secure the win and a place in the winners bracket Saturday.
