Sullivan pulls away from West Vigo in second half

SULLIVAN — Sullivan got back on the winning track in boys high school basketball action Thursday night.

The Arrows defeated West Vigo on their home court to snap a three-game losing streak in a Western Indiana Conference game, improving to 13-4 and 3-2 in the conference.

West Vigo twice had the lead in the first period that ended in a 10-10 draw as the Arrows scored the final three points of the quarter. Michael Willis had seven of Sullivan's 10 points and finished with nine for the game.

Sullivan began the second stanza with a 5-0 run but the Vikings scored the next four for a 15-14 score and Sullivan closed the quarter with a 7-0 run for a 29-20 lead at halftime.

The Arrows opened the second half with a 10-0 run to take command of the contest and took a 56-33 lead into the final eight minutes.

Ian Perkinson had been ill and did not start but came off the bench to score a game-high 12 points. He had eight in a row in the third quarter.

Two other Sullivan players were in double figures; Nate Pirtle and Brooks Weszely each had 10. Pirtle and Luke McPhail each had nine and Max Gregory tallied eight.

Hayden Corenflos had nine of West Vigo's points in the first half and finished with 11. Alex West scored eight and had six of the Vikes' 10 points in the final period.

Both teams return to action with games Saturday afternoon as West Vigo, now 5-11, concludes a three-game week. The Vikings also are slated to play Greencastle in a makeup game Monday and Sullivan will be at Bloomfield on Tuesday for its final road game of the season.

Next — Both teams will have games Saturday afternoon. Sullivan (13-4 overall, 3-2 WIC) plays host to Greencastle, while West Vigo (5-11, 2-4) is at Marshall, Ill.
