TERRE HAUTE — Martinsville was a winner in the first game of the Terre Haute North Class 4A Sectional for girls high school basketball Tuesday, defeating the host Patriots 54-45.

The 12-8 Artesians will face No. 8-ranked Mooresville in the first game Friday. Avon meets Brownsburg and Plainfield faces Terre Haute South today, with the action tipping off at 6 p.m.

Martinsville scored the last five points of the third quarter with Makayla Fergson hitting a 3-pointer at the buzzer to erase a one-point North lead and take a 38-34 lead into the final period.

The Artesians scored the first four points of the fourth frame — Gabby Fisher hitting twice from the field — to go up 42-34. North cut the lead to six points before Morgan Peeden hit a 3-pointer to put the visitors up 47-38.

North got no closer than four points the rest of the way as the Artesians cashed free throws for the final margin.

Martinsville had a 15-12 lead after one period and the teams were tied 21-21 at intermission. North had a 27-22 lead in the third quarter but the Artesians got the next nine points to hold a 31-27 lead.

North then used a 7-2 run to take that 34-33 lead before the visitors assumed the lead for good.

Fisher led the winners in scoring with 20 points and Peeden had 17. Peeden hit her first four shots and was 7 of 11 from the field while Fisher was 9 of 15. Martinsville connected on 22 of 48 shots.

Adrienne Pritchard closed out her career with another double-double, scoring 19 points and snaring 12 rebounds. She had 10 of North’s 13 points in the third period, scoring the first 10.

Pritchard was 6 of 10 from the field and hit 6 of 8 free throws. North was good on 15 of 37 shots and hit 11 of 16 free throws.

“We lost to a good team. We started off in the hole 6-0 and fought our way back to get the tie. Fisher came to play tonight. She shot the ball real well,” said North coach Mike Allen.

“We had some opportunities down the stretch and didn’t knock down the shots. Martinsville did. It was a well-fought game,” he added.

The game marked the final one for seniors Pritchard, Jennifer Bendickson, Sierra Sykes and Layne Curley.

“We’re losing four great kids. They built a great foundation. They gave us great leadership on and off the court and gave good direction to the young kids coming up. We won some games we probably were not supposed to and surprised some people on the way,” said the coach.

“It was a great season for us.”

Martinsville coach Vince Cerbone liked the way his team worked the basketball and played defense. “Gabby [and others] did a good job of keeping Pritchard away from the basket,” he said.

“Coach Allen’s teams are always well-coached … we had to make some adjustments. I am just thrilled with the way we played especially in the second half,” he added.

About Mooresville, he said, “We have our hands full. They play so hard. We’re going to have to be sure we come as well-prepared as we were tonight … they know how to win.”
