IU holds Oakland marksman in check

BLOOMINGTON — Oakland’s Travis Bader came into Tuesday night’s game at Indiana University’s Assembly Hall as the NCAA’s active leading 3-point shooter in men’s basketball.

The Hoosiers didn’t give him a chance to shoot the Grizzlies to an upset.

Bader’s NCAA-leading streak of games with a made 3-pointer ended at 62 as IU cruised to an 81-54 win.

“Coming in, we knew Bader was the best 3-point shooter in the country,” Evan Gordon said. “With a shooter like that, we’ve got to limit his touches, make sure he doesn’t get open looks coming off the screens.”

Instead, it was the Hoosiers (8-2) finding their range from beyond the arc, with a season-high 9 makes in 21 attempts beyond the arc.

The catalyst: Gordon, who was 4 of 5 on 3-pointers and 10 of 12 from the field overall for a season-high 26 points. He fell three points shy of his career mark, set last season against Sacramento State while he was at Arizona State.

Gordon made his first eight shots against Oakland (2-8) after starting 7 for 7 in the Hoosiers’ prior game.

“He was on fire tonight, so we knew we had to keep getting him the ball,” Luke Fischer said.

“We’ve just been moving the ball as a team,” Gordon said of his big night. “I stayed aggressive. Yogi [Ferrell] stayed on me to stay confident in my shot.”

“Evan’s 26 points are big, but to me his 13 deflections are just as important,” Indiana coach Tom Crean said.

Bader missed all 10 of his 3-point tries, finishing 2 of 15 from the field to end the nation’s longest active streak of made 3s. His last miss came at South Dakota State on Dec. 30, 2011. He was 7-for-7 from the line, though, finishing with 11 points.

The Hoosiers used an array of defenders on Bader: Jeremy Hollowell, Will Sheehey, Austin Etherington and others harassed Bader all night.

“We switched a lot,” Crean said. “We were very cognizant with where he was at.”

Troy Williams scored 13 and Ferrell added 11 points for the Hoosiers, who also had 10 rebounds apiece from Noah Vonleh and Jeremy Hollowell. IU outrebounded Oakland 52-28.

While Bader couldn’t find his shooting touch, teammate Mitch Baenziger couldn’t miss, hitting all five of his shots, including four 3-pointers, to lead Oakland with 14 points. Corey Petros scored 13.

Both teams suffered scary moments with players hitting the floor hard. Oakland’s Tommie McCune got tangled with IU’s Austin Etherington and a couple other players while going for a rebound, and was tended to, but he walked off on his own power and later returned to the game. And Williams took a nasty spill into the front row while going for a loose ball in the closing seconds but seemed OK afterward.
