Strong defensive effort keys RHIT victory

DECATUR, Ill. — Rose-Hulman placed three players in double figures and relied on a strong defensive effort to top Millikin 64-55 in men’s college basketball action Monday night.

Julian Strickland led a balanced scoring attack with 19 points on 10-for-12 free throw shooting and contributed eight rebounds and four assists.

Jimmy Miller added 11 points and eight rebounds while Jordy Martin contributed three 3-pointers in an 11-point performance.

Rose-Hulman led 55-44 midway through the second half before Millikin closed to within four points at 55-51 with a 7-0 run capped by two free throws from Jaylon Owens at the 4:07 mark.

 Four key free throws from Strickland turned a 58-53 score into a 62-53 margin with 1:11 remaining. Rose-Hulman held Millikin to just four points in the last four minutes and hit several key free throws to cap a 22-for-27 effort at the charity stripe to secure the victory.

 Deavis Johnson scored 13 points to lead the Millikin offensive effort, and Tives Gardner also had a double-figure scoring performance with 10.
