Dans’ Sutton shuts down Rex

TERRE HAUTE — The Terre Haute Rex needed victories Friday night against Danville and Sunday against Hannibal to clinch a Prospect League playoff spot as the first-half West Division champion.

The red-hot Danville Dans put a damper on the weekend, sending the Rex to their third loss in four games in front of a season-high 1,016 fans at Bob Warn Field. Danville won 5-2 as just two Rex batters connected off Danville pitcher Trevor Sutton through seven innings.

Catcher Caleb Caton caught the sweet spot to drill a ball 380 feet to left-center field for a home run, and Indiana State’s Jeff Zahn came about 10 feet shy of a homer to right-center for an RBI double.

But Sutton, a 6-foot-3, 230-pound right-hander located his quality fastball well all night to hold the Rex to three hits.

“We talk to our guys about limiting the big inning and staying away from that crooked number. Unfortunately, we couldn’t get to that crooked number spot,” Rex manager Bobby Segal said. “I think it was the sixth inning and [Sutton] had 66 pitches.

We didn’t grind hard enough with at-bats. We usually grind .. get to the bullpen sooner. We failed at that tonight.”

The Dans young pitcher improved to 2-0 in his second start.

“He kept the ball down, he was efficient. We scored him some runs and we were fortunate to get out of here with a win,” Dans manager Ernie Coleman said.

The Dans came up with a clutch performance at the plate as well, connecting for three two-out RBI hits.

“Those are big,” Coleman said. “We’ve got to put the ball in play with two outs. We’re facing a good ball club so anytime we can put the ball in play and put pressure on them with two outs, it’s obviously good.”

It’s a deflating loss for the Rex, Segal said.

“It’s tough falling at home and not putting together a strong performance,” Segal said. “Last time I checked they don’t give a trophy to the first-half winner. We’ve just got to go back to the drawing board and fix some things, come out ready to fight the second half.”

The Rex have faced adversity of late with injuries. Regulars in the lineup such as Ray Perez, Grayson Atwood, Kaden Moore and Tony Rosselli did not play Friday.

“The injuries have been tough on us,” said Caton, whose homer was his first of the summer. “We’re finding ways to work through it, injuries are no excuse, but once we get back on track we’ll have no problem.”

The Rex return to action Sunday at home after a needed day off today. Terre Haute played 18 games in 17 days, which included a seven-game winning streak.
