TERRE HAUTE —
Just imagine that you had a dream about the most awesome turkey hunt , but it was actually happening in real life.
Caleb Jenkins, Justin Mager Brett Brown and Lee Brenton are best of friends. They researched where they could hunt before Indiana's Turkey Season opened, could hunt all day and take more than one bird. The past two years Mager and Jenkins harvested birds in Missouri , so they wanted to see new territory.
Off went four Rednecks on a grand adventure to chase turkeys in the wide open spaces of Chadron Nebraska, it was the Merriam birds they sought. Pine Ridge National Forrest was their destination
They researched public ground extensively until a gentleman on the internet, said the folks are so nice in Nebraska, just knock on a door to ask and you can get permission!
April 11, 2014 at 2 p.m., they hit the road with great expectations. At 3 a,n, the next morning they couldn't believe they were actually there.
After 1 hour of sleep they were at awe with hearing birds gobbling everyplace as the sun came up, yes, their dreams get better.
Day 1, Split up in pairs and first thing was Justin calling a strutter as Brett set up to shoot. Yep, strutter No. 1 is down. Couldn’t get anymore birds to come in.
Day 2, Next morning the weather turned sour the temperature dropped to 7 degrees with 3 inches of snow and 30 mile per hour winds. They go anyway and didn't hear or see a thing. Mental thing from a all time high on one day to all time low the next.
Day 3, Heard some gobbles on private ground, but tried to find public ground. While driving and scouting they dove into their dream world!
As they drove into a small subdivision they rubbed their eyes and looked at each other like they had gone to heaven. In every yard was turkeys doing their thing. Caleb said there were over 200 birds at least. No, they weren't tame but wild birds.
A nice lady that owned 40 acres next to the subdivision said, sure go ahead and hunt, just don't shoot towards the houses. She got a real nice gift card from the boys the next day.
Caleb set up with a bird coming to him and let him walk past, then thinking, I should have taken him. Well, the bird came back, so he squeezed the trigger to find the shell to be a dud. He slowly ejected the shell to reload and the birds luck ran out, bird No 2.
