METRO SPORTS: Rose resumes regional baseball today

Moline, Ill. — Rose-Hulman returns to NCAA Division III Central Regional baseball play at 4:30 p.m. today, almost certainly against Buena Vista.

Buena Vista trailed St. Thomas 10-0 in a late game Friday, with the Engineers to face that game’s loser in a game originally scheduled for late Friday night itself. Thanks to early rains on Friday, the regional schedule was pushed back, and the Engineers would play a second game late today against DePauw or St. Thomas if they can beat Buena Vista.

Rose is 27-17, 1-1 in regional play, and one of four teams remaining. DePauw and the St. Thomas-Buena Vista winner are both unbeaten and play each other in today’s opener.

In other baseball:

n Reed a national semifinalist again — A.J. Reed has been named one of 35 semifinalists for the Dick Howser Trophy, given to the top player in college baseball, the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association announced Friday.

The Kentucky star and Terre Haute South graduate leads the NCAA in homers, slugging percentage and OPS and also leads the Southeastern Conference in RBI, total bases, walks (as a hitter), wins and innings pitched. He is also on the 30-player watch list for the Golden Spikes Award.

Reed pitched eight shutout innings and was 4 for 6 at the plate Friday night as Kentucky won its series opener at Georgia by a 13-0 score, and added his 22nd homer of the season in the top of the first inning of Saturday’s game.

n Another Montgomery record — At Louisville, Rose-Hulman’s Ryann-Rebecca Montgomery capped her collegiate career with a school-record performance in the 5,000-meter run Friday night at the University of Louisville Invitational.

Montgomery had a time of 17:33.73, breaking her previous record by nearly 30 seconds and placing second in a field of mostly Division I runners.

n Martin earns academic honor — Rose-Hulman’s Orian Martin has been named to the Capital One NCAA Division III academic all-district men’s at-large team, the College Sports Information Directors of America announced this week.

Still just a sophomore, Martin has already earned one All-America award and has twice been named College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Male Swimmer of the Year. He is a two-time conference champion in the 100 butterfly, an event in which he placed seventh nationally in March.

He has a 3.82 grade-point average as a physics major at Rose-Hulman.
